Description
Dichroic glass was developed for the space program to protect the windows of the shuttle. The art community has discovered it and it provides ultimate "bling". Dichroic means "two colors" in Greek. Dichroic glass gets its name because as you look at it from different angles, it changes color. It also changes color from its raw state after it has been fired in a kiln. Dichroic coatings are applied to glass in an electrostatic vacuum chamber. Sometimes the glass has a mind of its own and so most of my pieces are the result of serendipity and I rarely get two pieces alike even when I try. I love the play of colors and the metallic effects that result. I also love the deep-space or deep-ocean effects of the "windows" process (see upper left).
