Description
Intarsia is a lapidary process of creating a stone by assembling many small pieces of stone geometrically, fusing them together with molecular bonding. The pattern is created from the inside out. This particular piece started with precisely matched diamond hole cutters so that the diameter of the hole cut in the green piece exactly fit the hole cut in the white. The white/green body of the birdhouse was shaped with a faceting machine to produce symmetrical angles. Then the top red border was added controlling thicknesses to .001". The black and white checkerboard was built separately and then added as one piece, then the roof and the whole house surrounded by red. The arrows and borders were added a layer at a time. The process is very labor intensive; this stone took about a week to create.
