Title
Chasing and Repousse
Artist
Dianne Brooks
Medium
Jewelry - Copper
Description
Chasing and repousse are actually two techniques that add relief images to flat metal. The work is hammered with punches on a surface that will "give" under hammer blows, while giving some support. Chasing is done from the front, outlining and pushing the metal away from the viewer. Repousse is done from the back, pushing images out towards the viewer. Often the piece is flipped front to back many times as the design develops. The outline of these leaves were first chased into the smooth, pristene copper, then the whole piece was flipped over to repousse (push forward) the volume of the leaf. Background texture added near the end.
