Description
A cabochon is a domed stone with sloping sides to facilitate setting in a bezel. They can be of standard calibrated shapes like the oval at the left or the pear shape at the top. They can be square, rectangular, round, triangular, or trapezoidal like the boulder opal at the bottom. Free-form stones, like the Mexican opal on the right can have any shape other than the standard shapes. I am fascinated by the mystery of "what's in that rock?". Patterns and colors change from one part of the rock to the next, so each one is like a new surprise. I am especially fond of jaspers like the one on top for their patterns, agates because they take a spectacular polish, and opals, because of the challenge of chasing and bringing out the best color. My job when cutting any stone is to orient it to bring out the best pattern and color and then to achieve the best polish that stone can take. I thank my Dad for bringing rocks home from his travels for us to break open with a hammer to find the surprises inside.
